Political Union 101: The easiest class you’ll take this quarter!

What are debates and how are they structured?

Our weekly meetings are in the form of debates, but they're not like your high school's debate program. Two students take the "pro" and "con" sides and start off the meeting with short opening statements. Openers are followed by two periods open to the floor – the first for the room to ask clarifying questions to the debaters, and the second for an open forum, in which anyone can offer rebuttals, relevant facts, or their own opinions! We then pivot back to the same two students to provide closing arguments before taking a vote on the resolution.

How contentious are the debates?

Not very contentious at all! All debates are moderated by the Speaker, who ensures that people know out-of-line statements are frowned upon.

And (perhaps most importantly) after every debate, members continue the discussion at the Celtic Knot in Downtown Evanston.

What topics are covered? How are resolutions chosen?

Each week the Executive Board meets to decide on a resolution, which can cover almost any topic related to national politics, international current events, or campus issues. Members are able to input their suggestions via an online form or in-person to any member of the Executive Board. We would love to hear from YOU what topics should be discussed this year - keep an eye out for an upcoming survey!

Recently, we've debated vaccination distribution policy, the influence of PC culture, and whether universities should consider standardized test scores in undergraduate admissions processes.

Who can debate?

Anyone can lead a debate! It's a great way to gain experience in thinking on your feet, to practice speaking publicly in an open and friendly environment, and to get more involved in PU! If you have a topic that you're passionate about or are generally interested in debating, email nupoliticalunion@gmail.com to let us know!

How can I get more involved?

Come to weekly debates (7:00 pm in 1902 Sheridan Road), email nupoliticalunion@gmail.com to receive our weekly newsletter, talk to exec members, come to the Celtic Knot after meetings, give us a suggestion for a debate resolution, or, better yet, volunteer to debate!
